U23s to host Valencia in PL International Cup opener

West Ham United U23s to host Valencia in Premier League International Cup opener

Spanish side Valencia CF will be West Ham United U23s’ first visitors in this season’s Premier League International Cup.

In the pick of the fixtures announced today, Valencia will visit the U23s' home ground on Victoria Road in Dagenham on 11 September.

VfL Wolfsburg will subsequently travel to face the Hammers on 30 October – with the venue to be confirmed – before the U23s head to the People’s Pension Stadium on 27 November to take on fellow Premier League 2 side Brighton & Hove Albion, their final Group B fixture.

The Premier League International Cup is designed to allow developmental squads the chance to test themselves against the best young players on the continent, with 12 PL 2 squads and 12 elite European academies participating. All matches are played in the United Kingdom.

As well as domestic opposition in Brighton & Hove Albion, the Hammers have been handed a tricky draw in Wolfsburg – regulars in the competition, who were unfortunate to fall at the first hurdle last year – and Valencia, who are making their first appearance in the competition since 2016/17.

The side will be looking to progress further into this year’s competition, after being eliminated in the group stage last season despite having defeated reigning champions Porto.
