Loan Watch: Cullen's perfect Charlton start continues

Josh Cullen in action for Charlton Athletic

Josh Cullen’s fine start to life on loan at Charlton Athletic continued as a 2-1 home win over Plymouth Argyle took the Addicks into the EFL League One Play-Off places.

The south Londoners came from behind to win at The Valley, with Karlan Ahearne-Grant scoring both goals in a victory that took Charlton up to sixth in the table.

Lee Bowyer’s team have now won four league matches in a row as they prepare to face Luton Town – including Cullen’s former West Ham teammates Marek Stech, Dan Potts, Pelly Ruddock and Elliot Lee – at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Jordan Hugill played for the final 21 minutes of Middlesbrough’s goalless Championship draw with Swansea City at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Hugill, who was booked late on, will return to action on Tuesday evening, when Preston North End are the visitors to Teesside in the Carabao Cup third round.

The on-loan Hammers striker scored the winner in ‘Boro’s second-round win over Rochdale in August.

Marcus Browne will miss the visit of Premier League champions Manchester City when Oxford United welcome Pep Guardiola’s side to the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday evening. Browne, who also missed Saturday’s home EFL League One defeat by Walsall, has a knee injury.

In the Netherlands, Martin Samuelsen was a late introduction from the substitutes’ bench as VVV-Venlo beat NAC Breda 3-0 to move to seventh in the Eredivisie table. The Norway winger and his teammates will kick-off their challenge for the Dutch Cup at fourth-tier Westlandia on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Edimilson Fernandes was an unused substitute as Fiorentina rose to third in Italian Serie A with a 3-0 win over SPAL at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The Swiss midfielder will hope to get some game time when La Viola travel to Internazionale on Tuesday evening.

Toni Martinez was also given a watching brief as Rajo Majadahonda dropped to 17th in the Spanish Segunda Division after losing 4-1 at home to Extremadura at Wanda Metropolitano at the weekend. In the same division, Sead Haksabanovic has yet to make his debut for Malaga CF.
