Cresswell: The first win will bring us confidence

Aaron Cresswell

Aaron Cresswell will call upon positive memories of Goodison Park when West Ham United head to Everton for their return to Premier League action on Sunday.

Everton have enjoyed a good record against the east Londonders in modern times, but Cresswell was part of the team which overturned a 2-0 deficit to triumph 3-2 at the home of the Toffees in the 2015/16 season.

The Hammers looked down and out when they trailed by a two-goal margin with 12 minutes left, but goals from Michail Antonio, Diafra Sakho and Dimitri Payet turned the game around and left Cresswell and his teammates celebrating a famous victory.

Now, as Manuel Pellegrini’s men head into this fixture on the back of four straight Premier League defeats, Cresswell is targeting the three points which he is sure will kickstart their season.

“I remember that win well,” he said. “We went 1-0 down and they had a man sent off. Then it went 2-0 and you think ‘here we go’ but we were flying at the time.

“We got one back and I think it was Payet who scored in the last minute to win it 3-2 for us. It was a great day.

“Winning games brings confidence back – you can’t just roll out of bed one morning and be full of confidence. I’ll take any kind of win whether it’s 1-0 or 5-4, because winning games breeds confidence and that’s we’re looking to do.

“Obviously I grew up in Liverpool and played for Liverpool when I was a kid, but I’ve been in the game a long time now and I’ve been at West Ham for five years so I don’t look at this kind of game differently just because I grew up there.

“It’s just another Premier League game but one we’re certainly looking to win.”
