Spencer: We deserved more from Liverpool defeat

Becky Spencer felt her West Ham side deserved more out of the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool Women at Rush Green.

The only goal of the game came on eleven minutes, with Courtney Sweetman-Kirk giving the Reds an early lead. Despite West Ham pushing for an equaliser, with captain Gilly Flaherty and Leanne Kiernan going close, Liverpool held their lead and left east London with the three points.

Spencer pulled off some fantastic saves during Sunday's fixture, and feels the performance from the side warranted at least a share of the points.

Spencer told whufc.com: “I thought the girls battled really hard. Liverpool really defended for their lives in the second half, Fran Kitching had a really good game in their goal.

I know it’s a clichéd thing to say, but we definitely deserved more out of that game. We’re disappointed.

“We deserved more out of the game today, I know it’s a clichéd thing to say, but we definitely deserved more out of that game. We’re disappointed, but we’ve just got to pick our heads up and go again next week.”

The loss to Liverpool means West Ham have suffered back-to-back defeats, but Spencer is confident the side can turn their recent form around with a positive showing in the next match, away to Everton Ladies.

The shot-stopper is already looking forward to an intense week of training as the side looks to prepare for next Sunday's match.

She continued :“To be honest we’re not going to change much, we’ve just got to keep training well this week, get back in to a positive mindset, get over this and put this behind us and go again on Sunday.

"We’ve just got to keep battling and just make sure everyone’s mindset stays strong. It’s going to be another battle like today, we’re all in that same place in the table at the moment and these points are really important, so it’s going to be another big battle for us.

“Everton are a good team, so we just got to expect exactly the same as what we’ve had today.”

An incredible 1,966 supporters attended the FA WSL fixture at Rush Green Stadium, and Spencer has expressed her gratitude to the fans that created a fantastic atmposhere for Sunday's game.

“It was incredible. The fans gave us a really good atmosphere and we really appreciate it. There were so many people, I think this is the most we’ve had this season. It was a really nice atmosphere for everyone. They kept cheering and kept us going until the end, so we all do really appreciate it.”
