Goalkeeper Becky Spencer signs for West Ham Ladies

West Ham United Ladies are delighted to confirm the signing of goalkeeper Becky Spencer from Chelsea F.C. Women.

Shot-stopper Spencer moves to the Irons after two years with the Blues, having enjoyed a career which has also seen her play for Arsenal, ASJ Soyaux, and Birmingham City.

“As soon as the opportunity came to join West Ham I was delighted and it was something I was really interested in,” Spencer told whufc.com. “I feel really comfortable being here and it’s been nice to get the feel for the Club.

“I watched a few games last year, including the Women’s Cup final win over Charlton Athletic, and the side achieved great things last season. I saw the team play a different style of football, which was nice.

“I know West Ham is looking to attract new players who want to go on a new journey with the club. The vision and aspiration at West Ham is great and is something I really want to be a part of.”

The 27-year-old, pictured wearing the new West Ham United 2018/19 away kit, has also represented England at U20s and U19s level, and was a key player in the side that claimed the UEFA European Women’s Under-19s Championship in 2009.

General manager Karen Ray is thrilled West Ham have brought in a goalkeeper of Spencer’s quality for the first season in the FA Women’s Super League.

Ray said: “Becky is a great addition and her passion, desire and determination matches the Club. The experience she brings from her impressive career to date is something that will only serve to benefit the new players coming in.

“Having international and Champions League experience and joining us from arguably one of the best women’s teams in the world is an exciting prospect. Matt has spoken highly of Becky and I am confident working with him will only propel her onto achieving her career ambitions.

“The professional and assiduous environment that Matt is creating is a big attraction for players and we are building a team that really honours our joint core values.”

For Spencer, the chance to play for West Ham United Ladies and be at the genesis of an exciting new project in the WSL was too good to pass up, with the goalkeeper excited for the challenge to come.

She continued: “After I left Chelsea I needed a new challenge. I’m 27-years-old and this seemed a really inviting opportunity for me.

“It’s a new start for everyone. I like the thought and feeling and starting something fresh, and being the part of a journey from the start.”
