Loan Round-Up: Fernandes wins big on Fiorentina debut

Edimilson Fernandes in action for Fiorentina against Chievo

Edimilson Fernandes made a winning debut for Fiorentina as he kicked-off his season-long loan spell in Italy.

The Swiss midfielder started for the first time as the Viola thrashed Chievo 6-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Serie A.

Fernandes, 22, played for the opening 54 minutes before being withdrawn, having already been shown a yellow card, with his team leading 3-0.

Elsewhere, Martin Samuelsen played for 65 minutes as VVV-Venlo drew 1-1 at Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Toni Martinez also featured for 65 minutes before being replaced as newly-promoted Rayo Majadahonda were beaten 1-0 at home by Mallorca in Spain’s Segunda Division.

Closer to home and Jordan Hugill came off the bench to make his debut for hometown club Middlesbrough in a dramatic 1-0 Championship win over West Bromwich Albion on Friday evening.

Sam Byram was also in Championship action on Saturday, starting Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw against Birmingham City at the City Ground before being withdrawn with 15 minutes to play.

In League One, Marcus Browne helped Oxford United to their first league win of the season as Karl Robinson’s team beat Burton Albion 3-1 at the Kassam Stadium.

Hugill, Browne and Byram could all be in EFL Cup action in midweek, with Middlesbrough at home to Rochdale and Oxford travelling to Newport County on Tuesday, while Nottingham Forest host Newcastle United live on Sky Sports on Wednesday.
