Hendrix: Hammers have learned a lot from pre-season

West Ham United women’s team have taken a lot from their first pre-season together, according to defender Brooke Hendrix, as the side prepares for their final preparation match of the summer.

Matt Beard’s team will take on FA Women’s’ Championship side Lewes at The Dripping Pan on Sunday in their final pre-season match, having beaten Charlton Athletic 4-0 last time out.

Hendrix believes the side have developed well throughout the summer and the structure implemented in training by Beard has helped the players to grow into a unit.

We’re all new to the team so we’re all having to come together. It’s been very structured but it’s been great fun as well.

“Pre-season has been pretty good so far,” the American told West Ham TV.  “We’ve had a few bumps in the road but I think we’ve learned a lot from the games we have played.

“Matt has been doing really well in terms of how he wants us to play and getting us into a structured settlement. We’re all new to the team so we’re all having to come together. It’s been very structured but it’s been great fun as well.”

With West Ham’s move into the Women’s Super League, the Irons have embarked on an ambitious summer of recruitment, and Hendrix is delighted with how the new players are bonding already.

She added: “Team bonding is going very well. I think, because we’re all new, we all don’t really know anybody so, we’ve come in and had to really come together as a group.

“Even in the off-time we get along and do little things like get food, but those make the biggest difference.”

Following this weekend’s clash with Lewes, West Ham will begin the 2018/19 season with an away fixture against Arsenal in the Continental Cup.

The Gunners are the current trophy holders and finished third in last season's FA WSL 1 table and Hendrix is prepared for a tough, but exciting, test to kick-off the campaign.

“It’s a huge game for us to start off with. I think it’s good for us to start big and get some momentum into the season. We will see what we will be able to. I’m looking forward to the test!”
