Reid - The players will stick together

West Ham United defender Winston Reid insists the players will stick together and will stay strong as they look to cement their position in the top half of table.

Despite the disappointing result against Manchester City on Wednesday night, the Club looked to have turned a corner following consecutive wins over Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.

Reid has no doubts there is enough strength and character in the squad to bounce straight back from the 4-0 defeat and hopes they can show their quality once again at St Mary's Stadium.

Reid said: “We spoke about how in difficult times you have to rally together. It’s fair enough when things are going well that it’s easy to jump on the bandwagon.

“Especially when times were tough even a couple of months back we had to stick in together and be strong and we’ve come out the other side. We still aren’t out of the woods yet but we’ve looking up more than we’re looking behind us now.

“We don’t have any cups to worry about so the league in the main thing and we can look at the rest of the season. We’ll keep everyone fit and raring to go and it’s full steam ahead.

Reid will be hoping to see Andy Carroll back on the scoresheet following his three goals in two games which helped the club secure back-to-back victories.

The New Zealand international has no doubts that the 28-year-old is now back to his best in the Hammers attack and hopes he will be one of the star performers on Saturday afternoon.

Reid added: “It’s been good for him to get back among the goals. He’s a happy camper these days and he’s in good form and I’m pleased for him. He’s been scoring goals and doing well and the main thing is that he stays fit.

“He’s been doing really well for us and as a team we’ve been doing well and looking strong up front and been scoring goals which is important for us.

“He brings something completely different to the game and he’s a sort of old fashioned striker if you want to call it that, compared to other types of player that we have.

“It’s good to have different types of players in the team because it gives you different options and I’m sure the manager is happy that he’s scoring.”

Reid is also looking forward to forging a strong partnership with new signing Jose Fonte at the heart of the Hammers defence and knows it will be a big day for him when he makes a return to face Southampton.

With Angelo Ogbonna ruled out for the rest of the season after he was forced to undergo knee surgery, Reid has no doubts they have brought in another great addition to the squad.

“We’ve done a good bit of business bringing him in – he’s a really good guy. He’s a good bloke and obviously a good leader, he was captain before so I’m sure he’ll be good around the boys as well.

“He adds to the quality that we have in the squad and that’s the most important thing. Quality rather than quantity.

“When you look at it with Angelo, he was playing a bit when he was injured and he was struggling, which is something people and fans don’t always see, that he was playing injured and trying to do his best.

“At the end of the day he needed surgery so he’s done really well to come through this, especially with the important period before when we really needed him. It’s his time now to get himself sorted out and to be ready for next season.”
