Highlights - Northampton Town 1-1 West Ham United PL2

FT: Northampton Town 1-1 West Ham United PL2 (West Ham win 3-2 on penalties)

5:
O'Toole misses Northampton's fifth spot-kick, so the Hammers take home the extra point! That was an interesting end to the tie, but the Hammers deserved that extra bonus. A good game of football which Terry Westley's men controlled in parts. The competition has been great experience for the youngsters. Over and out from Sixfields!

4: Sonupe misses and Dan Kemp gives the Hammers the lead!

3: Byrom scoes, and so does Alfie Lewis. 2-2.

2: Phillips scores for Northampton. So does Pike!

1: Beautyman hits the bar and it goes over! Browne's effort is saved too.

FT: That's it for the 90 minutes! The Hammers did so well and could have - probably deservedly - won that at the death. Penalties it is!

90+1: The Hammers go close! Dan Kemp volleys from Alex Pike's cross and is inches away from giving the Hammers the victory. So unlucky for the winger!

90+1: Two minutes of injury time have been signalled at Sixfields.

88: Many thanks to the 189 Hammers who made the journey tonight to be part of tonight's crowd of 762!

87: We're inching closer to that dreaded penalty shootout...

84: Another chance! Like the first half, the Hammers are finishing much the stronger. JHI gives a chance to Alfie Lewis to shoot, but his attempt from ten yards is charged down well. The Hammers look dangerous!

82: Great work from Browne! He fights two or three times on the edge of the hosts' box for possession and eventually prods one to Hector-Ingram, who tees-up Makasi. The midfielder's effort tests the keeper but it was tame, in truth.

78: Neufville comes on for Westley, here.

77: Remember, if this finishes level, we'll have a penalty shootout to decide which side goes home with an extra point on top of their one from the draw...

75: A nice burst of pace from Alex Pike gets him behind full-back Hanley, but the 19-year-old can't keep his cross in play.

73: A deep Town corner comes in then, and Hector-Ingram - on the floor it seemed - somehow managed to scramble one clear! Sub for the hosts, who bring on Joe Iaciofano in Alex Revell's place.

69: Wonderful stuff from Tunji Akinola who gets back on the line to deny Beautyman a second! The youngster stuck his knee up and pinged away the livewire's goalbound effort. Great defending!

67: It's got to be said, the Hammers are performing brilliantly out here tonight. Northampton, don't forget, are a League One side and are currently in the third tier's play-offs. They've fielded a strong team tonight, too.

65: Sub for the Hammers. Parfitt-Williams, who gets a warm reception from the home crowd, is replaced by Joe Powell.

60: Chance for Hector-Ingram! The forward is released inside the box but can't slide one past Cornell in goal who saves with his legs.

57: Superb work by Dan Kemp who releases Jahmal Hector-Ingram before getting absolutely snapped in the centre of the park. Hector-Ingram races away but a heavy touch lets the keeper get to the ball first. Sub Rod McDonald gets booked for his ugly challenge on Kemp, who seems OK.

54: Moses Makasi and West Ham break, and the midfielder nutmegs a defender in the penalty area but can't deliver his cross. Good attack from the Hammers!

53: Northampton's best chance of the game - better than their goal - comes the way of Alex Revell again, but he heads over after a clear run and jump. Should have scored. The hosts have started strongly.

51: A mix up at the back gives Northampton forward Alex Revell a chance to head towards goal, but he gets his effort hopelessly wrong and sends it well wide.

48: The rain has now started to come down at Sixfields. It's a very, very chilly evening, might I add. West Ham have stayed out of danger since that early scare in this second period.

46: We're back underway at Northampton Town in this Checkatrade Trophy tie. The Cobblers storm up the Hammers' end and have a couple of efforts on goal straight away but eventually settle for a corner. Browne heads clear.

HT: That's it for the first 45 in Northampton. The Hammers looked dangerous throughout, but even more so at the end there. They could be ahead! A wonderful move led to Parfitt-Williams' first of the season. Make sure you catch that on our highlights in the morning! All to play for in the second half.

43: It could have been two! Jahmal Hector-Ingram stands up a lovely cross to the back stick and Alex Pike steaming in at pace, can't keep his effort down.

40: GOALLLL FOR THE HAMMERS! Djair Parfitt-Williams collects a clever Dan Kemp pass and smashes past the keeper with a little help from the crossbar! It's no less than the Hammers deserve!

38: Great chance for West Ham! Marcus Browne breaks at pace from a Cobblers corner, and laying off Lewis, he gets back the pass but skies his effort.

34: Marcus Browne slipped as he was about to deliver that centre, and Northampton can clear. It's still 1-0 to the hosts with just over ten minutes of this first half remaining.

33: It comes to nothing, but the Hammers win back possession and grab a corner on the other side. It's cleared for a third! Meanwhile, Bubbles rings out at Sixfields.

32: Some good teamwork on the right sees Pike and Kemp win the Hammers a throw deep in the Cobblers' half. The full-back wins a corner as a result.

28: Since the goal, West Ham have dominated possession and Northampton are struggling to get to grips with their movement. No clear cut chances for the visitors of yet, however.

23: Goal for the hosts. That's extremely frustrating. Northampton's free-kick is only half cleared, and Harry Beautyman fires in low after being teed-up on the edge of the box. The Hammers will argue it should never have been a free-kick in the first place.

22: Strange decision to penalise Sam Westley after he clearly got a full foot on the ball in a tackle. A chorus of 'You don't know what you're doing!' comes from the away end!

19: There's a healthy crowd inside Sixfields tonight, too. The main stand we're currently sat in is nicely filled and the end West Ham are defending in this first half is filled with around 150-or-so Hammers. Great support as usual.

16: As you'd expect, the Hammers are up against a side who certainly have a physical threat. Alex Revell, the big front man, will be a test for Rice and Akinola and the two centre-backs, Diamon and Nyatanga, are both big lads too.

12: The Hammers really look the part out here tonight. This time it's Makasi at the centre of the good work, as he feeds one into Dan Kemp. Kemp sends Jahmal Hector-Ingram through, but his hopeful attempt is blocked well.

9: More promising stuff for the Hammers. Browne turns beautifully in the centre of the park and spreads one wide for Parfitt-Williams. His cross is cut out for a corner, but Browne's centre is cleared.

6: Fantastic play there by the Hammers. First, Tunji Akinola pings a lovely ball into Parfitt-Williams, who lays it off to Alfie Lewis. Lewis sprays one wide for the onrushing Alex Pike but he just runs the ball out of play on the byline. Great football by the visitors.

5: Some superb defending there by Declan Rice. He's just been called into the Republic of Ireland's U21s squad for the first time this week!

3: As we've seen in the previous two Trophy matches, Terry Westley has fielded a very young side this evening. Five of the starting lineup regularly turn out for the Club's U18s.

1: And off we go at Sixfields. The Hammers are wearing their change strip as not to clash with the deep red of League One side Northampton Town. Marcus Browne bursts forward but is tackled right on the edge of the area.

7:40pm: We're just minutes away from kick-off now at Sixfields as the players enter the pitch. Come on you Irons!

7:30pm: Just to remind you, the Hammers were beaten 4-2 at Coventry City and 3-0 by Wycombe Wanderers previously in this competition, but they gave great accounts of themselves in both matches. Hopefully tonight, they can come away with something to show from their efforts. Fact of the evening; the last time the Hammers faced Northampton Town? In a League Cup tie back in September 1998. Frank Lampard Jnr scored the game's only goal. 15 minutes until kick-off here!

7pm: Good evening! We're live from Sixfields for tonight's Checkatrade Trophy tie against Northampton Town. It will be the Hammers' last in the competition this season after two previous defeats left them unable to progress from the group stages, but it's been a great experience for the youngsters to play in this competition, and tonight's likely to be no different. Let's hope for a cracker!
