Some iconic items went under the hammer at Saturday's live Farewell Boleyn Auction
A host of a Hammers fans got their hands on some historic Boleyn Ground items on Saturday in the Live and Webcast Farewell Boleyn Auction.
Memorabilia such as framed and signed photos, match-worn shirts, signs from around the ground and West Ham medals and trophies went under the hammer with the proceeds of the event going to the Club’s very own Academy of Football.
The unique lots, steeped in history from West Ham’s 112-year connection with the Boleyn Ground, commanded huge popularity with both those buying from their seats in the Betway Stand and from their computers online at home.
One of the items, a corner flag used for matches at the Boleyn Ground, was purchased for over £500 by Brian and Liz Dennis, and they were delighted to place the winning bid.
“We were just looking for something that was actually here [at the Boleyn Ground] and that we could recognise, and hopefully the corner flag will do the job!" Brian said. “I first came here in 1959 and was a season ticket holder for years, so we wanted something to remember the place by.
“We have a West Ham room at home, so the corner flag will go in there in the corner, and it will be good. We’d love to purchase one or two more things; we'd love to buy the bubble machine that's coming up soon!”
Many fans expressed how much they enjoyed the atmosphere at the event, with so many of the attendees getting involved with the bidding process.
Also buyers were Spencer Teachen and Julie Jones, both West Ham season ticket holders, who splashed out £700 on the Hammers turret flag pole and flag out the front of the Boleyn Ground.
Pleased with his purchase, Spencer said: “The flag is part of the history to the stadium as it's by the entrance. It's got West Ham on it as well, and that's what we wanted. We wanted something to remember this ground by.
“It’s been a good atmosphere this afternoon. It's a good experience for us to come here for the last time. We're all spent out now though, but we've enjoyed the day!”
Meanwhile, the Stadium Contents and Football Memorabilia online auctions continue here. They are set to close over two days, on 8 and 9 June, and 13 and 14 June respectively.
