Classic Match - Stretch shreds Saints

West Ham United rose to fourth in the Division One table following a 1-0 victory over Southampton at the Boleyn Ground on 8 April 1986.

John Lyall's Hammers were in the midst of an amazing fixture backlog that saw them contest their final 13 league matches in the space of 37 days.

A run of three straight wins had been ended at Nottingham Forest the previous weekend, but Alvin Martin's goal proved to be enough as the Saints were beaten in east London in front of 22,459 fans.

West Ham, of course, went on to win eight of their final ten matches to finish third in the table - a record-high placing that has never been beaten.

On Monday 14 September, the Boys of '86 will be honoured as part of the Club's Farewell Boleyn celebrations at the Barclays Premier League fixture with Newcastle United. Click here for more information about how you can get involved!
