Classic Match - Boys of '86 down Red Devils

West Ham United’s Boys of ’86 made their names by finshing in a record-high third place in the old Division One 30 seasons ago.

However, John Lyall’s entertainers also put on a show in the FA Cup, reaching the quarter-finals with impressive wins over Charlton Athletic, Ipswich Town and, after a replay, Manchester United.

After a 1-1 draw at the Boleyn Ground, midfielder Geoff Pike scored his first of the season to put the Hammers in front in the Old Trafford replay on 18 minutes.

Alvin Martin was then fouled in the box after half-time and penalty king Ray Stewart made no mistake from 12 yards, blasting the spot-kick past Chris Turner to secure West Ham’s passage into the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately, Sheffield Wednesday would prove too strong in the last-eight, but Lyall’s heroes had again shown their class by putting Ron Atkinson’s Red Devils to the sword in front of 30,441 fans at Old Trafford.

On Monday 14 September, the Boys of '86 will be honoured as part of the Club's Farewell Boleyn celebrations at the Barclays Premier League fixture with Newcastle United. Click here for more information about how you can get involved!
