Ladies suffer cup defeat

West Ham Ladies crashed out of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup with a 1-0 defeat away to C&K Basildon on Sunday afternoon.

Having already beaten C&K Basildon 3-2 away in the league just last week, Marc Nurse’s side were pitched against their local rivals in the first round after beating Crystal Palace in the cup’s determining round earlier this season.

The game was won midway through the second half when Basildon striker Maegen Doyle beat the offside trap and finished confidently past Indian international goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan.

After Wednesday’s 8-0 Boux Avenue Ryman Women’s Cup First Round victory at Burgess Hill Town Ladies, Nurse made two changes to the starting eleven.

Development Squad defender Danielle Sillitoe returned back to normal duties and was replaced by Kayleigh Xidhas in defence, whilst winger Kelley Blanchflower dropped to the bench to allow Italian star Giulia Ferrandi to return to the side.

In the early stages of the game, the Hammers looked confident from their midweek Ryman Cup victory and were passing the ball round the pitch extremely well.

There were a lack of chances for both teams during the opening half, although striker Emma Sherwood did find room from 18 yards from Xidhas’ cross but the shot only found the Basildon keeper.

In the second half, winger Whitney Locke got in behind the hosts defensive line but she failed to keep her shot from flying high over the bar.

The only goal of the game came just after the hour mark when a stray shot from the Basildon midfield found Doyle through on goal and as soon as she realised there was no offside flag against her, she confidently finished low past Chauhan into the corner.

Nurse’s side tried to fight back into the game, but Steve Tilson’s Basildon side held on well and progressed to the second round of the cup.

West Ham return to FA Women’s Premier League South duty with an away trip to Charlton Athletic Women on Sunday 11 October, with kick-off at Sporting Club Thamesmead scheduled for 2pm.
