John Hartson says it is imperative that West Ham United appoint a new manager who will excite and be embraced by the Club’s ‘terrific supporters’.
The former Hammers and Wales striker, who scored 33 goals in 73 appearances in Claret and Blue between 1997 and 1999, insists the new boss must be a man who tries his best to follow the ‘West Ham Way’.
With the Hammers now confirmed entrants in next season’s UEFA Europa League, Hartson is hoping the Board appoint a man who can get fans out of their seats on a regular basis.
“I played in front of the West Ham fans for two years and they are terrific supporters,” said the 40-year-old. “I just feel that they respect the job Sam has done but they were not very happy with certain elements of Sam Allardyce being in charge.
“The man they want is a manager who is going to play exciting football, a manager that likes to play out from the back.
The Swansea-born forward, who also excelled for Luton Town, Arsenal, Wimbledon and Celtic during a successful career, says the Hammers’ passionate fan base value entertaining, passing football and will demand as such during the Club’s historic final season at the Boleyn Ground, and going forward into the new Stadium in Stratford.
“West Ham have always traditionally passed the ball there under the lights at the Boleyn,” continued Hartson, who played in the side which finished in a record-high fifth position in the Premier League in 1998/99.
“Obviously I think the new Stadium is very exciting for them so, as I said, it’s imperative that they get the right man that the crowd can get behind as well.”
