Classic match

Newcastle United 2-3 West Ham United
Division Two
26 May 1947

The Hammers were approaching the end of the first season of league football following the Second World War when they travelled to Newcastle United on this day 68 years ago.

They were safely in mid-table, a long way clear of any relegation danger but too far off the front runners to still hold hopes of promotion.

But a good win at St James' Park in their final away game maintained their eleventh position in the table.

The goalscorers were Almeric Hall, Jackie Wood and Ken Bainbridge as West Ham won 3-2 in front of a 30,112 crowd.
