Ipswich Town 0-1 West Ham United
Division One
17 May 1985

The Hammers travelled to Ipswich Town for their penultimate fixture of the 1984/85 season with their top flight status not yet secure.

Despite sitting as high as fifth at the end of November, an alarming slump over the next couple of months saw them drop towards danger.

Although John Lyall's men never slipped into the bottom three, they were hovering dangerously when they went up to Portman Road, so the three points gained came as a relief.

Tony Cottee notched his 24th goal of the season to give West Ham all three points and move them up to 16th in the table from their previous precarious position of 19th.

The east Londoners were defeated 3-0 at home to Liverpool on the final day, although it was not to matter as the 51 points gained was enough to keep them in Division One by a two-point margin.
