Anniversary

Name: Andy Malcolm
Date of Birth: 4 May 1933
Date of Death: 26 December 2013
Clubs: West Ham United, Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers

Andy Malcolm, who would have celebrated his 82nd birthday today, could not have turned out for a more local club than when he made his Hammers debut in December 1953.

Born in Upton Park, he went on to play his part in West Ham's Division Two title-winning campaign in 1958.

He was also the recipient of the Club's first Hammer of the Year award in the same year and played 306 games in the claret and blue before moving on in 1962.

Chelsea was his next destination, and after half-a-season with the Blues he signed for Queens Park Rangers, where he played a further 84 league games.

Malcolm's career ended with spells in South Africa, Greece and with Brentwood Town, and after spending time as landlord of pubs in Maldon and Latchington, he emigrated to Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1986. The ex-Hammer passed away at his home in December 2013.

Classic match

West Ham United 2-0 Coventry City
Division One
4 May 1977

West Ham United's last victory on this date in the calendar came 38 years ago when they welcomed Coventry City to the Boleyn Ground.

The Hammers were in the midst of a relegation battle in the top flight, so this maximum-point haul came as welcome relief to majority of the 25,461 in attendance.

A Geoff Pike penalty, plus Bryan 'Pop' Robson's goal were enough to see off the Sky Blues, who were also threatened by the drop.

Ultimately, both teams would go on to avoid the unwelcome fate of second tier football the next term, as West Ham earned four points from their final three games to finish in 17th position with 36 points - two more than Sunderland in 20th.

Coventry were in a more precarious position, but also survived with their final tally of 35.
