Swindon Town 1-3 West Ham United
Division One
2 May 1993

West Ham United took themselves to the brink of promotion to the top flight with a 3-1 victory over Swindon Town on this date in the calendar 22 years ago.

The Hammers had dropped out of the division's top two when they lost to Luton Town three games previously, but all three points against the Robins hauled them back above Portsmouth and into the driving seat.

Trevor Morley scored one of his 22 goals that season, while Clive Allen and Kenny Brown stepped off the bench to get on the scoresheet and help the Hammers towards a crucial win.

Swindon were also in the promotion hunt, and they would go on to earn a place in the Premier League alongside the Hammers after defeating Leicester City in a dramatic Play-Off final at Wembley.

West Ham's success was sealed with a 2-0 win over Cambridge United the following week, which meant Portsmouth finished third, level on points with 88, but six goals worse off.

Newcastle United went up as champions with 96 points to their name.
