Classic match

West Ham United 4-1 Stoke City
Division One
27 March 1964

West Ham United's first FA Cup winning campaign brought mixed fortunes in the league on the way to a 14th place finish, but this visit of Stoke City was one to savour for the Boleyn Ground crowd.

Having been defeated by Leicester City in the League Cup semi-final just four days previously, the Hammers needed to bounce back swiftly and did so in style.

The hosts' four goals came from four different sources, with Bobby Moore, Peter Brabrook, Ronnie Boyce and Johnny Byrne all getting on the scoresheet.

Byrne's goal was one of 33 that season, while Boyce would go on to net the 90th minute winner in the FA Cup final win over Preston in May.

Ironically, the Hammers' 4-1 win over Stoke was quickly avenged by the Potters, as they triumphed 3-0 in the return fixture on 31 March.

West Ham did, however, claim a superior league position to Stoke by the season's end, finishing 14th, two points clear of 17th-placed Stoke.
