Classic match
West Ham United 3-1 Chelsea
Division One
25 March 1978
West Ham's bid to stave off relegation to the second tier gathered fresh impetus on this day courtesy of a 3-1 derby-day win over Chelsea in 1978.
Having seen off Ipswich Town 3-0 at the Boleyn Ground the day before, the Hammers secured another priceless home victory thanks to goals from Sir Trevor Brooking, Bill Green and Pat Holland. Incidentally, it was centre-half Green's only goal in his 40 appearances in claret and blue.
It proved to be the second of six wins in the club's final nine fixtures, though West Ham would still be relegated on the final day of the season, along with Newcastle United and Leicester City.
Needing a draw at the very least, John Lyall's men succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat by Liverpool, ending the Hammers' 20-year stay in the top division as they finished 20th, just a solitary point from safety.
West Ham United: Ferguson, Bonds, Lampard, Curbishley, Taylor, Green, Pike, Holland, Cross, Brooking, Robson.
