West Ham United 4-2 Manchester City
Premier League
23 March 1996

The Hammers were en route to a 10th place finish in the Premier League - their best campaign since winning promotion from the second tier in 1993 - when they welcomed Manchester City to the Boleyn Ground on this day 19 years ago.

City, meanwhile, found themselves in a relegation fight, and the Hammers were to show them no mercy as they triumphed by a 4-2 margin.

Northern Ireland international Iain Dowie (pictured) notched two of the goals - part of a tally of nine for the season - while left back Julian Dicks and Portuguese forward Dani were also on target for the home side, meaning Niall Quinn's double for the visitors counted for little.

The victory came as revenge for the Hammers' 2-1 loss to Manchester City earlier in the season, and set them up for a top half finish, with 51 points from the 38 games played.

City's conclusion to the campaign was more bleak, as they were relegated on goal difference, with Southampton and Coventry City escaping.
