View on the Visitors - Sunderland

The Sunderland Echo’s Black Cats reporter CHRIS YOUNG lifts the lid on Saturday's visitors.

In a nutshell, what have you made of Sunderland’s season?

The first half they were pretty solid if unspectacular. They drew a lot of games and were hard to beat but since the turn of the year they’ve unravelled pretty much. Jermain Defoe was brought in to try and help score more goals but I think Poyet struggled to work out the best way to use him.”

What’s do you make of Gus Poyet’s sacking?

“I think after the Aston Villa result it was inevitable really. They were so, so bad in the first half, his position was almost untenable. The performance against Hull City was also poor and they’ve been struggling for a while so it looked like it was going to happen sooner or later.”

Is Dick Advocaat the right man to keep Sunderland in the Premier League?

“He’s certainly got a huge amount of experience, both winning trophies and at international level so the task in hand shouldn’t phase him. Having said that, he’s never managed in the Premier League so he’s a bit of an unknown quantity. I think giving him a short term deal is a good idea.”

A full version of the interview will be available in the official matchday programme.
