Classic match

West Ham United 3-5 Manchester United
Premier League
16 March 2002

Manchester United were given an almighty scare at the Boleyn Ground eleven years ago, as the then Premier League leaders twice came from behind to run out winners in an eight-goal classic.

A frenetic opening 23 minutes saw the sides share four goals, with Steve Lomas starting the goal-fest courtesy of a bullet header from Vladimir Labant's centre.

David Beckham levelled matters with a brilliant lob over David James, before Frederic Kanoute restored the hosts' advantage, slotting past Fabian Barthez from 18 yards.

Just six minutes later, Nicky Butt acrobatically volleyed home Beckham's free-kick to peg back Glenn Roeder's men for a second time. It was to remain that way until ten minutes after the interval, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer squared for Paul Scholes to convert from close range and hand the visitors the lead for the first time.

It was Solskjaer himself who made it four, as Beckham's right-wing cross eventually landed kindly at the Norwegian's feet, who squeezed home from an acute angle.

Jermain Defoe halved the Hammers' deficit with 12 minutes left on the clock, finishing smartly across Barthez from a Frederic Kanoute cut-back. There was, however, to be no grandstand finish, as Tomas Repka was adjudged to have felled Scholes, allowing Beckham to settle it once and for all from the spot.

Ironically, defeat prompted an excellent end to the campaign, as the Hammers won five of their eight remaining fixtures to secure seventh spot.
