Croatia 3-0 Denmark
UEFA European Championship Finals Group D
16 June 1996

Two Hammers players came face to face at Euro 96, when Croatia took on Denmark in a Group D fixture at Hillsborough.

Danish defender Marc Rieper scored two goals in 42 games for the Hammers in the season preceding the tournament, while fellow defender Slaven Bilic, who joined the Hammers in January of that year from German side Karlsruher, was earning his seventh cap for Croatia.

It would be Bilic who would end the match far the happier, as the Croats went on to claim a 3-0 victory which secured their place in the quarter finals with a game to spare and knocked defending champions Denmark out.

The game was still finely poised going into the final nine minutes, with Davor Suker's opener the difference at that stage, but a second goal from Zvonimir Boban and Suker's 90th minute breakaway strike gave Croatia a comfortable win.

Croatia were defeated 3-0 by Portugal in their final group game, before exiting the tournament at the last-eight stage with a 2-1 loss to eventual winners Germany.
