The Hammers kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 triumph over Coventry City just two days earlier, and this maximum-point haul lifted them to the head of the table.
John Lyall's side were fresh from finishing third in the table the previous season, and they looked to be continuing their good form with a double from Frank McAvennie and a Alan Devonshire goal giving them their three at Old Trafford.
Frank Stapleton and Peter Davenport scored for the Red Devils, but it was not enough to give them a share of the spoils.
