Classic match

West Ham United 5-2 Notts County
Division Two
19 August 1978

West Ham United have hit five goals three times on this date on the calendar, with the most recent coming 37 years ago.

The Hammers were still reeling from relegation when Notts County visited the Boleyn Ground for the opening game of the season, but this five-star display helped lift the mood for the new campaign.

A David Cross hat trick provided the base for the thumping 5-2 victory, with a Jeff Blockley own goal and an Alan Devonshire strike completing the scoring.

West Ham would never drop any lower than seventh in the Division Two table in the 1978/79 season, but a final points tally of 50 was only good enough for fifth, six points shy of the promotion places.

The Hammers have also struck five goals on 19 August in 1972, when defeating Leicester City 5-2, and when they beat Lincoln City 5-0 in 1953.
