West Ham United 2-0 Chelsea
11 August 1969
Division One

West Ham United took to the summit of Divsion One with a 2-0 home win over Chelsea on this day 46 years ago.

Two days earlier, Newcastle United had visited the Boleyn Ground for the season's curtain raiser, with a Geoff Hurst goal settling the contest.

Hurst, meanwhile, was on the scoresheet again here, as fellow FIFA World Cup winner Martin Peters also netted, preserving the Hammers' early 100 per cent record.

Four points out of four and a second successive clean sheet proved sufficient to take Ron Greenwood's men to the top. Their stay there, however, proved shortlived, with defeat at Stoke City next time out bringing the Hammers back down to earth with a bump.
