One Goal programme a success!

A successful first week of the One Goal project saw over 50 local youngsters take part across Beckton and Barking and Dagenham.

In conjunction with nine other football clubs from London, and along with the help of funding from the L&Q Foundation, One Goal is a brand new sports and creative arts programme with the aim of using the huge attraction of sports to motivate young people.

The programme offers participants free opportunities, including access to football, cricket, tennis, athletics and basketball sessions, plus skill workshops, and a number of creative activities such as arts, writing and street dance.

The morning multi-sports sessions saw the young attendees take part in a variety of fun games led by West Ham United Foundation coaches. After lunch the youngsters were put through their paces with a lively boxing workshop, before going on to create their own fantasy football teams.

Community Sports Officer, George Chukwuma was delighted with how successful the programme has been even in these early stages.

"We have had a fantastic turn-out for the One Goal project and it's great to see local young people getting involved with activities and sports that they would not normally be interested in. The afternoon sessions are a chance for them to be exposed to activities they would otherwise not have access to."

One Goal sessions run on weekdays throughout the summer at Beckton Globe Community Centre and Mayesbrook Park in Barking and Dagenham.
