Jenkinson confident of Hammers chances

Carl Jenkinson firmly believes the Hammers have what it takes to overcome Astra Giurgiu in the Hammers second leg tie in Romania on Thursday night.

Speaking to the media ahead of the crucial tie, the 23-year-old insisted that he and the rest of the squad are confident of progressing to the fourth qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League.

“Astra are a good side, the fact they got a draw at our place shows that. This game is slightly complicated by the fact we play Arsenal three days later. We know we need to perform, it won’t be easy, but I’m confident that we can win.

“We’ve bought a strong enough squad with us, one more than capable of winning.”

Following a successful loan spell in east London last season, the England international described his delight at extending his loan spell for a second season.

“I’m over the moon to be back at West Ham and buzzing to be back playing football.  In the past twelve months, I played by far the most games in a single season.

"So I needed a rest mentally and physically but now I’m back, feeling good and can’t wait to get back to it.

“I’ve experienced European football before and it’s always a good experience. Every player wants to test themselves and you learn a lot about yourself as a player.

“Everyone here and at the Club wants to go through tomorrow, that is the bottom line. We all know how important European football is to the fans. Added to the fact it’s the last season at the Boleyn Ground it’s a great addition to an already important season.”
