West Ham United took a step closer to UEFA Cup qualification with a 1-0 win over SC Heerenveen on this day 16 years ago.
Having seen off Finnish outfit FC Jokerit in the third round of the Intertoto Cup, Harry Redknapp's Hammers were subsequently paired with Dutch side SC Heerenveen in the semi-finals.
Though Frank Lampard netted after just seven minutes in the first leg at the Boleyn Ground a week earlier, West Ham were unable to extend their lead, thereby taking a slender advantage to the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Again, the contest would be settled by a solitary strike, though this time it was Paulo Wanchope who popped up with the goods after 25 minutes.
Though hardly emphatic, the 2-0 aggregate scoreline saw the Hammers safely into the final, where they famously went on to meet FC Metz.
