Yavari Trekkers orienteer around London football grounds

A team of east Londoners set across the capital in the hope of raising funds for a life-changing expedition to Peru.

The local young people, who all have an association with the West Ham United Foundation departed  from the new Stadium at 8am and navigated their way around every London Premier and Football League Club before finally gracing the Boleyn Ground at 11pm.

Though London rivalries are often fierce on the pitch, Clubs from across the capital welcomed our weary wanderers with open arms as they sort to navigate their way back to the home of the Hammers.

The sponsored orienteering challenge was one of a number of initiatives the wannabe trekkers will be taking part in to raise sufficient funds for their excursion.

The group’s team leader Timothy Lukwago spoke of his excitement surrounding the expedition and the enthusiasm of the team to help raise as much as possible.

“It’s going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for us all. To be able to trek up to Lake Titicaca carrying the name of West Ham on our back is something we can all take great pride in. The team is doing everything they can to raise the money and the support has been great.

Today’s orienteering event was another fantastic initiative to help build on our team spirit and ultimately finance the expedition. “

The team's goal is to retrace the footsteps of the Victorian gunboat, Yavari, which was built in 1862 by the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co, also the birthplace of West Ham United.

The experience will test leadership, team skills, stamina and tolerance in foreign and demanding conditions. It will provide a mental and physical challenge, a cultural exchange and endorse the historic link between the communities of West Ham, London with Lake Titicaca, Peru.
