Teddy Sheringham
Born: 2 April 1966
Clubs: Millwall, Aldershot (loan), Djurgardens (loan), Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Portsmouth, West Ham United, Colchester United.

Former Hammers frontman Teddy Sheringham is today celebrating his 49th birthday, seven years after calling time on his long and illustrious playing career.

The England centre-forward, famed for his touch and vision, made the switch from Portsmouth to east London in the summer of 2004, as Alan Pardew prepared his squad for a second successive year in the second tier.

Sheringham netted an invaluable 21 times in 36 run outs the following season, as Pardew's men ended an arduous campaign in sixth, before securing promotion back to the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 Play-Off final win over Preston North End.

Though used somewhat more sparingly in the top flight, the veteran forward still weighed in with vital goals, including West Ham's very first upon their return to the big time, in a 3-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers.

Sheringham would eventually depart for Colchester United at the end of the 2006/07 season having notched 30 times in 87 appearances for the club.

More recently, Sheringham rejoined the club as Attacking coach in July 2014. His impact has been widely praised by several players, with his vast experience helping to get the best out the squad.

Classic Match

Wigan Athletic 1-2 West Ham United
2 April 2005

West Ham United came from a goal down to earn a crucial away win at Wigan Athletic on this day in 2005, as they breathed fresh life into a then ailing promotion push.

Alan Pardew's side set off for the Latics with just two points to show from their last five league outings and four points adrift of the play-off places.

Wigan, meanwhile, were second at the time, some 20 points ahead of the eighth-placed Hammers. After a goalless first 45, West Ham's plight worsened five minutes after the interval, when Jason Roberts raced on to Graham Kavanagh's through ball to tuck home his 19th of the campaign.

The Hammers, however, would be behind for little more than four minutes as birthday-boy Teddy Sheringham slammed into the rood of the net from close range. And Marlon Harewood completed an unlikely turnaround midway through the second half, collecting Mark Noble's pass before firing past 'keeper Mark Filan from the edge of the box.

With a spring in their step, West Ham would win four and lose just one of their final seven fixtures, securing an all-important play-off spot with a 2-1 win at Watford on the final day.
