Classic match

West Ham United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur
1 April 1972
Division One

West Ham United completed a rare league double over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on this day 43 years ago.

Ron Greenwood's Hammers, sitting 12th in the top flight at the time, were without a win in three when fifth-placed Spurs came to town.

Earlier that season, Clyde Best had scored the game's only goal in the reverse fixture on 27 December at White Hart Lane.

On this occasion, goals courtesy of Ade Coker and Trevor Brooking (pictured) would settle the contest, with the former making a first start in upward of four months and only his fourth of the campaign.

Though victory propelled the Hammers to 11th, the home win was to kick-off a miserable April in which Greenwood's men would lose three and draw the other of their four league outings.

West Ham did at least round off the 71/72 season on a high, as Bryan Robson netted in a 1-0 home win over Southampton to end a 14th successive year in the top tier in 14th spot.
