Gianfranco Zola's reign as West Ham United manager got off to a flying start thanks to fellow Italian David Di Michele.

The striker opened the scoring after only eight minutes when he cut in from the right, beating two players before his shot looped up off Steven Taylor and past Shay Given.

Home debutant Di Michele then doubled the lead after 37 minutes when he kept his composure to beat Given again at the second attempt.

The frontman turned provider for the third, setting up Matthew Etherington to put the game to bed before Michael Owen struck a consolation.

West Ham enjoyed a comfortable win over Newcastle in 2001 with three different players getting on the scoresheet.

A comprehensive win got underway when Don Hutchinson met Laurent Courtois' cross at the near post, sending the ball past Shay Given after 18 minutes.

The second goal arrived eight minutes into the second half with Paolo Di Canio cutting in from the left, beating Warren Barton, and striking the ball into the far corner of the net.

A superb win was complete when Frederic Kanoute slid the ball home eight minutes from the end to consign the Magpies to their first defeat of the season.

West Ham followed up a win at Stamford Bridge in their previous match with another three points against their visitors from the north east.

As he had done against the Blues, Paul Kitson got himself a goal to sink the club from whom he signed for the Hammers.

Mercurial Italian Paolo Di Canio also got in on the act to down the Magpies as the east Londoners earned an important win on their way to a fifth place finish.

The Hammers biggest ever win against Newcastle came back in 1986 as the home side put on a show for the Boleyn Ground crowd.

Alvin Martin bagged the biggest haul of the day as he netted three out of the eight goals with one coming from the penalty spot - and all three coming against a different goalkeeper!

Paul Goddard, Neil Orr, Frank McAvennie and Ray Stewart scored a goal apiece with Glenn Roeder the unfortunate scorer of an own-goal.

West Ham enjoyed another home win to remember when they handed out a five-nil drubbing to the Toon in 1979.

The Hammers had already enjoyed a 3-0 win at St James' Park earlier in the season before they went two better here.
