Sam Howes suffered defeat in his first appearance at the UEFA European U17 Championship finals as England lost 2-0 to Holland in Malta on Thursday.
The Hammers stopper replaced Newcastle United's Freddie Woodman in one of seven changes made to the team that beat Turkey 4-1 to secure qualification to the semi-finals three days earlier.
The Young Hammer of the Year award winner was beaten by second half goals from Calvin Verdonk and Dani van der Moot as the Young Lions slipped to defeat in their final group match.
John Peacock's side were already assured of their place in the semi-finals ahead of their meeting with the Dutch at Hibernians Stadium, but were forced to settle for second place in the group after the loss.
Both sides had won their opening two games of the tournament with England's superior goal difference meaning a point would have been enough to take them through as group winners.
The defeat means that Howes and his team-mates will now face Portugal in the semi-final on Sunday.
