Ladies suffer Addicks agony

Sarah McCrea's brace wasn't enough for West Ham United Ladies as they conceded two late goals in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of local rivals Charlton Athletic in the FA Women's Premier League on Sunday.

The Hammers, who celebrated reaching the final of the Essex FA County Cup last weekend, went ahead when McCrea rifled home midway through the first half.

Kit Graham equalised for the away side before McCrea struck again, beating the visiting goalkeeper with a long-range effort to give the hosts a half-time lead.

Any thoughts the Hammers had of taking all three points were snatched away in the final ten minutes as Stefanie Simmons equalised, before Graham found the net again to hand the Addicks the spoils.

The manner of the defeat was cruel on the Hammers who had dominated proceedings for long spells and looked likely to pick up only their fourth league win of the season against fifth-placed Charlton.

A bright start had the Addicks on the back foot from the off before the Hammers got reward for their efforts after 21 minutes.

McCrea was a constant menace to the Charlton backline and she fired the home side in front when she turned her marker before powering home a shot from the edge of the box.

Buoyed by the goal, the Hammers were on the hunt for a second when their visitors struck back in spectacular style, with Charlton striker Graham sending a high looping shot over the helpless Lauren Picton in the West Ham goal to tie the game up.

The home side weren't behind for long, however, as six minutes before the break McCrea grabbed her second of the afternoon, drilling a long-range effort past the Addicks 'keeper.

In the second half the hosts looked comfortable and good value for their lead before the momentum of the game changed completely in the last ten minutes.

An equaliser arrived when Simmons broke through the Hammers backline before placing a shot past Picton.

Things got even worse for the hosts, who came away with nothing when Graham's cross from the left flew straight into the net to leave Hammers' heads in hands.
