West Ham United will be hoping their good recent away form against Cardiff City will continue when they visit the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In recent years, the Hammers enjoyed play-off success in the Welsh capital during the promotion winning season of 2011/12 and have only suffered defeat in one of their last ten matches away to Cardiff.

Two goals from Welshman Jack Collison saw off Cardiff City as West Ham United put one foot into the play-off final.

The midfielder struck the first after only nine minutes, nodding the ball home at the second attempt after Ricardo Vaz Te's cross from the left.

His second arrived just before half-time when he pulled the ball down on his chest and fired a shot from outside the box which took a wicked deflection past David Marshall in goal.

In the second leg, the Hammers confirmed their trip to Wembley with a comfortable 3-0 win.

West Ham enjoyed victory on their first ever visit to the Cardiff City stadium in their first away match against the Welsh side in eight years.

Captain Kevin Nolan grabbed the first goal after 43 minutes when he curled a side-footed effort past David Marshall.

The second came from an unusual source when George McCartney popped up on 77 minutes to fire past David Marshall from an acute angle.

Jermain Defoe netted a hat-trick at Ninian Park to send the Hammers through to the fourth round of the League Cup.

In an all-Championship affair, the visitors found themselves staring at elimination when they fell behind to two Robert Earnshaw goals after 25 minutes.

The Bluebirds hadn't however accounted for the striker who notched his first on the stroke of half-time when he converted a penalty.

Defoe got his second after 64 minutes and was on hand to complete the turnaround in the 88th minute when he grabbed the winner.

Fresh from reaching the FA Cup final three days earlier, West Ham prevailed again when they returned to league action against Cardiff.

Ray Stewart, who scored two penalties in the reverse fixture between the side earlier in the season, scored the only goal of the game as the Hammers earned three points.

The defender scored 14 goals during the season, three of which came against the Bluebirds, as West Ham finished the season in seventh.

League Cup second round replay
22 September 1971

After a 1-1 draw at the Boleyn Ground, West Ham triumphed in the replay thanks to goals from a familiar source.

Billy Bonds had scored the Hammers' goal in the first tie but Geoff Hurst took control by scoring twice in the replay to ensure the visitors passage into the next round.

West Ham went onto beat Leeds United, Liverpool and Sheffield United before eventually succumbing to Stoke City in the sem-final after two replays were needed.

West Ham reached the League Cup final after an emphatic 10-3 aggregate win over the Bluebirds.

Doubles from Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters with a goal from Dennis Burnett were more than enough to secure a passage through to the final.

The Hammers were not destined to win the trophy however as West Bromwich Albion won the two-legged final 5-3 on aggregate.
