Fresh from reaching the League Cup final four days earlier, West Ham kept the feel good factor going with a comprehensive win against London rivals Chelsea.
A 2-0 win on the same ground against Coventry City earned the Hammers their final place with a 4-2 aggregate win and there were more goals for the taking against the Blues.
Mercurial playmaker and crowd favourite Trevor Brooking scored twice, while there was a goal each for David Cross and Alan Devonshire.
Whilst the home side went onto lose the League Cup final to Liverpool, they were crowned champions of Division Two by 13 points.
