West Ham United 5-4 Bradford City
Premier League
12 February 2000

West Ham United played their part in one of the most thrilling games in Premier League history on this day in 2000 as they edged out Bradford City in a nine-goal spectacular.

With the game only five minutes old the Hammers were forced to substitute goalkeeper Shaka Hislop who was stretchered off after breaking his leg in an innocuous challenge with Dean Saunders.

Regular back-up Craig Forrest was away on international duty with Canada which paved the way for Stephen Bywater to make his debut at the age of just 19, and what a debut it turned out to be.

The stopper went onto concede the opener as Dean Windass headed home on the half hour mark. Trevor Sinclair and John Moncur made it 2-1 before Peter Beagrie netted a penalty to send the sides in level at the break.

Jamie Lawrence put two past Bywater in the opening six minutes of the second half as Bradford built up a 4-2 led which they held with 25 minutes remaining.

Paolo Di Canio converted a penalty after a tug-of-war over the ball with Frank Lampard to start the comeback. Joe Cole then brought the scores level with twenty minutes still to play leaving it to Lampard to bury a spectacular winner with seven minutes left.
