WEST HAM UNITED v SHEFFIELD UNITED
CAPITAL ONE CUP SECOND ROUND
BOLEYN GROUND
TUESDAY 26 AUGUST 2014
KICK-OFF: 7.45PM
REFEREE: JAMES LININGTON
TEAMSHEET
Full time: West Ham United 1-1 Sheffield United AET (4-5 pens)
Penalties:
Doyle steps up...that's in. Sheffield United knock the Hammers out on penalties. Cool penalty to win it for the Blades, stroking it into the bottom left as Jaaskelainen dives the other way. It ends 5-4 on penalties.
Valencia...saved. Sheffield United with the chance to win it.
Now McEveley...high into the top left with Jussi going the wrong way. 4-4.
Poyet...calm and collected, rolls it right with the keeper going left. 4-3.
McNulty for the Blades...hands to it from Jaaskelainen but it squeezes in. 3-3.
Zarate...blasts it high and down the middle. 3-2.
Collins for the visitors...Jaaskelainen guesses incorrectly and he levels it again 2-2.
Downing steps up and rolls it low and right into the corner. 2-1
Now Davies for Sheff Utd...good penalty. Goes high to the right and although Jussi goes the right way there's no chance. 1-1.
Noble is first up...goal! Low to the right, with the keeper going the wrong way. 1-0.
The shoot out will take place at the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand end of the ground, forcing a sprint from the snappers who stationed themselves at the other!
ET FT: That's it. Penalties will be needed to decide who will be heading through to the third round.
118: Time's running out now, but Howard doesn't let his concentration slip to hold on to Valencia's free-kick. It was travelling, but close to the goalkeeper and he made sure he held on.
115: Downing takes on a shot from 25 yards, but that one certainly goes down as hopeful and does not trouble Howard as it rockets high over the bar.
114: West Ham are forcing the issue again and Downing comes so close to getting rond the back of McEveley, but he recovers just in time to poke the ball away from the home winger.
109: The Blades defenders are throwing their bodies in front of the ball as Noble and Downing are denied by flying blocks in quick succession. Committed defending as the home crowd turns the volume up a notch in a bid to encourage their side.
107: DIame is fouled out wide on the left and Noble is oh so close to catching Howard out with his curling, dipping cross-shot towards the far post. The Blades breathe a sigh of relief as their keeper gets back just in time to touch the ball wide.
106: We're back underway once more. Can either team find a winner here?
ET HT: Fifteen miniutes left to play now and still we're locked level at 1-1.
105: Poyet tries his luck from range after picking up a square pass from Diame, but it's a comfortable save for Howard. West Ham will want to impose themselves on the contest more again in the second period of extra time.
102: Campbell-Ryce has been a lively presence since his introduction and his deflection shot wins a corner, from which McEveley shoots goalwards and almost extracts an error from Jaaskelainen as the ball squirms away from him. Noble is there, though, to hack clear.
100: Sheffield United make their final change of the night, as James Wallace comes on for Jose Baxter. The withdrawn man is taking his time to come off the pitch, giving him some abuse from the Hammers crowd. I'm sure he won't mind though.
99: Enner Valencia causes a moment of concern for the Blades as he peels off his man in the left channel to collect a diagonal ball. He stands up Collins, but his shot takes a deflection so dones not trouble Howard in the Blades goal.
98: That's the end of Ravel Morrison's night. Mark Noble is coming on for him to give the midfield some fresh legs.
96: Indeed, it is the Blades who inject a bit of pace as a Hammers move breaks down on the edge of the area and Campbell-Ryce gallops downfield. He reaches the cusp of the area before shooting, but Reid gets the block in and West ham can build again.
95: Much like the start of the second half, the opening moments of extra time is lacking a certain tempo. Sheffield United are defending their box in numbers however, so it won't be easy tov break through.
91: After a brief break, the extra time period gets underway. The Hammers are kicking towards the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand in the first half.
FT: Neither team can force their way through in the additional time and we'll need another 30 minutes to settle this one. Meanwhile, the crowd has been announced as 28,930. A fine attendance at the second round of this competition.
90: There'll be four minutes of added time, and in the first of those Sheffield United skipper Doyle goes into the book for stopping Morrison as he burst clear in the left channel.
89: Another nearly moment as Downing slides a through ball to Diame. He can't quite get the ball under control inside the box and McEveley recovers to nick the ball off his toes.
87: The ball's not quite dropping for the Hammers inside the box, and after Demel heads back across goal, the Blades defender gets to Valencia well to shut down his space and get a block in. Time running out for a normal time winner now.
85: Zarate has the home fans on their feet with a swift change of direction which buys him the space for a left footed shot 16 yards out. His low effort bounces off Howard, but Sheffield United smuggle the ball clear with Valencia lurking.
84: I think that's what you call a hopeful cross from Ben Davies. There's nobody in the box except for Jaaskelainen and he can just watch it out for a goal kick. The Blades take that opportunity to bring on former Jamaica international Jamal Campbell-Ryce for Flynn.
83: Downing has time to size up a shot from range and it's almost a decisive one as the merest of nicks gives it the dip which almost beats Howard, but he arches his back and springs back to tip over the far. A fine effort and a fine save.
79: The Hammers turn to Mauro Zarate as they look towards a winner in normal time. Saturday's first goalscorer is on for Ricardo Vaz Te.
78: It all gets a bit lively for a minute as Doyle and Flynn go in for 50/50s in midfield. Poyet is penalised for a foul on the latter and there's a chance for both teams to take a breather after that frantic moment.
75: Sheffield United seem to have weathered that storm created by Downing's introduction, although Howard has to be sharply off his line to take the ball off Valencia's feet as he bears down on goal. 15 minutes for either side to find a winner.
72: There's a slight delay in play, meanwhile, as Blades left back Bob Harris receives treatment after coming off second best from a heavy challenge with Diego Poyet. He cannot continue and Jay McEveley is on in his place.
71: Poyet passes the ball into Diame's feet in midfield. He looks to trick past his man on the half-way line, but instead runs into trouble, allowing the away side to break, feed wide to Davies and Basham to head wide as the ball comes in.
67: It's starting to flow for the Hammers down the right. This time is is Demel who sends the ball into the penalty area. Vaz Te jumps, but his header must take a touch of a defender's head as referee Linington signals for a corner. Again it comes to nothing though, and it remains 1-1.
65: Downing's introduction has given the Hammers some added impetus and he looks for Vaz Te at the far post, whose attempted acrobatic volley is blocked behind for another corner. Sheffield United scramble clear but this is instantly better from West Ham.
64: Better from the Hammers as Vaz Te gets his toe in on the edge of thebox and sets a quick break in motion. Downing is haring down the right in his first involvement, and although his cross is nodded out, Diame knocks the ball back through the area to Valencia. He lays off to Potts and his cross is headed behind for a corner.
63: Sakho gets an hour on his first Hammers start, and the goalscorer is withdrawn for Stewart Downing as Sam Allardyce looks to freshen up his attacking threat.
60: Dangerous stuff from the visitors as first a cross fizzes over the box from the right hand side, and Harris picks up the pieces down the left and fires in an equally inviting cross from that glank, which Basham meets with a header that flies wide of the near post. West Ham need to up it again.
57: Goal! Well that punctures the quiet start to the second period. Blades left back Bob Harris swings over an innocuous looking cross from the left hand side, but it flicks off McNulty's head, hits an unfortunate Winston Reid and leaves Jaaskelainen helpleess in the Hammers goal. 1-1.
52: It has been a quiet start to the second half, with both sides seemingly taking stock of the situation before getting at the game again.
49: Slack play from the Hammers as Demel is caught waiting for the ball to come to him, allowing Harris to nip in and make his way down the left flank. The Blades work the ball inside for McNulty, but he's crowded out by Reid at the near post and it dribbles through to Jaaskelainen.
8.47pm We're back underway for the second period. Neither team have made any changes.
HT: The half-time whistle blows and the Hammers take a lead into the break/. Diafra Sakho could not have asked to make a better impact in his first 45 minutes at the Boleyn Ground, heading home from Reece Burke's delivery and it will be a happy dressing room for the home side at the break.
45: Sakho almost turns provider as the Hammers look for a second storming forward in the right channel to control Poyet's diagonal ball and square across the face of the goal. Valencia is coming in at some pace, but not quite quickly enough as the ball evades his slide and Sheffield United escape. Meanwhile, fourth official Gavin Ward has indicated one minute of added time.
40: GOAL! The Hammers lead and it's Diafra Sakho on his full debut for the Club! The home side work the ball patiently with Morrison playing the ball to Burke on the right flank. The defender crosses from that flank, picking out Sakho's run to the near post, where he guides a header over Howard's dive and into the right hand corner. A dream Boleyn Ground debut for the Senegalese frontman.
39: Sheffield United win a couple of corners, with neither side yet to truly stamp their mark on the contest yet. The first is too long, and the second is gathered by Jaaskelainen as West Ham see off that threat.
34: Diame looks to inject more tempo into this particular move, passing into Vaz Te's feet and getting on the move. Vaz Te uses his run by not using him, and is clipped by Doyle. Morrison takes the free-kick and forces a save from Howard. It's a corner to the Hammers and it yields another chance as Morrison delivers and Burke heads goalwards only to be denied by Howard. Another corner, and this time Morrison takes short before collecting the return ball and driving into the box. He goes down but referee Linington judges it to be a dive and produces a yellow card for the Hammer.
30: Chance for Valencia as Diame sets him clear in the right channel. The defender cannot get back at him, allowing the Hammers full debutant to get his shot away, but Howard gets down well to his left to block.
27: It's an end-to-end couple of minutes and Reid concedes a corner when trying to get the ball back to Jaaskelainen. The Hammers skipper is adamant the ball deflected off the Blades man hunting him down, but the linesman is unmoved over his protests. In any case, the corner comes to nothing. Still 0-0.
26: Play swings to the other end and after Demel's cross is cleared as far as Poyet 25 yards out, the Hammers man takes the shot on but can't get enough dip as it flies over.
24: The visitors are starting to gain a foothold, with Davies looking capable of delivering dangerously from the left. He gets a lot of whip on his cross and Jaaskelainen isn't able to come for it, but Demel is there to tidy up at the far post.
21: Almost immediately Mark Howard is called into action for the first real time and he has to react sharply to keep Enner Valencia's fiercely-struck effort out. He can't hold on first time, but Vaz Te is too far away to gat onto the rebound and the goalkeeper gathers.
20: United stand firm in the face of that spell of possession and almost get in themselves, as McNulty takes a swing with his right foot. He barely makes a connection however, and Reid shepherds behind for a corner. Davies delivers and Alcock connects but hooks wide of the right hand post.
17: Space opens up for Morrison all of a sudden outside the area and he opts to take the shot on, but gets right underneath it and the strike balloons into the Sheffield United fans gathered in the Sir Trevor Brooking stand.
15: Neat play from the Hammers as it begins to click for them going forward. Poyet is involved heavily, calmly knocking the ball about, before releasing Potts down the left. Diame then moves play back inside, and Demel's eventual cross is headed wide as Vaz Te and Valencia jump together for it in the box.
13: Great battling from Diame in midfield to keep an attack alive and spread the play out wide to Demel. That's where the move runs out of steam, however, as his cross takes a nick off the first man and is cleared.
12: Sheffield United have their first sight of goal. It's only a half chance though as a cross comes in from the right hand side and Davies heads for goal from 15 yards out, but cannot get it on target.
8: Promising moment for Valencia on the edge of the Blades box as he drops his should and moves the ball on to his left foot. The angle is against a shot, so he stands up a cross towards the far post, but it drifts over Sakho's head and the visitors can clear.
5: West Ham enjoying most of the early possession, but most of the game so far has been played out in midfield. Neither goalkeeper has been tested as yet.
2: Ravel Morrison looks to have taken up a central positio in attacking midfield early on, looking to support Enner Valencia up front, while Diafra Sakho will look to come inside from the right hand side to join the attack when possible.
7.45pm We're off and underway. Come on you Irons!
7.43pm There's a healthy crowd inside the Boleyn to greet the Hammers with a rousing chorus of Bubbles. We reached the semi-finals of this competition last year, can we start another good Capital Cup run again this evening?

Good evening and welcome to the Boleyn Ground for tonight's eagerly awaited Capital One Cup second-round tie between West Ham United and Sheffield United. The two clubs will meet for the first time since the 2006/07 Premier League season, with a place in the last 32 up for grabs for the winner.
Both come into the tie off the back of wins at the weekend - West Ham won in some style, defeating Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park in the Barclays Premier League, while the Blades triumphed 1-0 at home to Crawley Town in League one.
Having reached the semi-finals last season, the Hammers are entering the competition at this stage after receiving a first-round bye, while the visitors saw off Mansfield Town 2-1 in the first round.
Team news-wise, several of the Hammers' summer signings could be given their first starts tonight. Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia could feature in attack, while Diego Poyet will be hoping to be selected in midfield. James Collins returns following suspension, but Kevin Nolan is out after suffering a shoulder injury last week.
For Sheffield United, midfielder James Wallace could miss out with a groin problem, while fellow midfielder Stefan Scougall has also been absent in recent weeks. Boss Nigel Clough has insisted that his team will approach the game with all guns blazing as they look to embark on another famous cup run.
The two clubs have met twice previously in the League Cup, with West Ham prevailing on both occasions. Bryan 'Pop' Robson scored a hat-trick and Clyde Best twice in a 5-0 fifth-round home win in November 1971, before Frank McAvennie and a Mike Small penalty secured a 2-0 third-round success at Bramall Lane in October 1991.
West Ham reached the semi-finals of last year's competition, beating Cheltenham Town, Cardiff City, Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur before eventual winners Manchester City ended their run. The Hammers have twice reached the final of the tournament, finishing as runners-up to West Bromwich Albion in 1966 and Liverpool, after a replay, in 1981.
The Blades have reached the semi-finals once, in 2002/03, but have been eliminated at the first-round stage in three of the previous four seasons, including last term.
The teams will be confirmed at just after 6.45pm. In the meantime, please feel free to comment on Twitter and Facebook - use the matchday hashtag #WHUSHU to join the conversation. Also, we are running the usual #WHULINEUP and #WHUGOAL competitions on Twitter, with signed prizes up for grabs for the winners.
