Anniversary

Lawrie Leslie
Born: 17 March 1935
Clubs: Hibernian, Airdrieonians, West Ham United, Stoke City, Millwall, Southend United

Scottish stopper Lawrie Leslie joined West Ham United in 1961 from Airdrieonians, as he quickly established himself as a top talent.

Edinburgh-born Leslie scooped the coveted Hammer of the Year award the following season, a remarkable feat given the high-class talent throughout the highly-regarded side assembled by Ron Greenwood.

After 57 league appearances, Leslie moved on to Stoke City before heading back to the capital in 1966 to join old rivals Millwall. He then more than contributed to what was a remarkable run for the Lions of 59 home games without defeat from 22 August 1964 to 14 January 1967.

Leslie would end his playing career at Southend United, before taking up coaching roles at Roots Hall and former employers Millwall.

Classic match

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 West Ham United
Premier League
17 March 2007

Alan Curbishley's Hammers headed to Ewood Park some ten points from safety, with only nine games to save their top-flight skin.

The afternoon started badly for the visitors, as Christopher Samba powered a header past Robert Green to see Rovers ahead at the break. Two goals, however, in the space of four second-half minutes would give lift-off to the 'Greatest Escape.'

With 71 on the clock, Howard Webb pointed to the spot, as Brett Emerton tripped the fleet-footed Carlos Tevez. The Argentinian got back to his feet to send Brad Friedel the wrong way and hand the Hammers a lifeline.

If the penalty award irked Blackburn, the winner left them positively seething. Bobby Zamora's shot struck the boot of Carlos Tevez, stood on the goal line at the time. Tevez wheeled away in celebration, before linesman Jim Devine awarded the goal. David Bentley was sent off late on, as the Hammers held on for three precious points.

It was to be the first of seven wins in their last nine league fixtures, as Curbishley's men clambered clear of relegation, thanks in part to a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on the final day.
