90 mins - Taking the positives out of a defeat is a real cliche, but West Ham's build-up play and chance creation has been top-drawer tonight. Unfortunately, the finish just hasn't been there. 89 mins - Corr is replaced by Jason Williams. Corr picked up a knock as he went for that header a moment ago.

87 mins - Southend relieve the pressure as Shaw concedes a foul. The free-kick comes over and Corr wins the header, but the ball loops harmlessly into the hands of Spiegel. West Ham are quickly back on  the offensive searching for that elusive goal.

86 mins - West Ham are finishing really strongly. This time it is Tombides who works a yard on his left foot and thumps a shot into Bentley's midriff from 25 yards. West Ham have had countless chances. Can they score the equaliser?

85 mins - West Ham miss another golden chance. Nasha beats a man and plays a one-two. He would be clear, but Tombides and the right-back get in each other's way. Tombides wins the battle and lays the ball off for Maguire, but he cannot find the net as Auger blocks the shot.

84 mins - Southend bring on Josh Banton for Payne.

83 mins - Maguire has the ball in the net after a superb flowing move. The Irish youngster rounds Bentley with confidence and slots in from an acute angle before running off to celebrate in front of the West Ham fans. Only one problem - he was offside...

79 mins - Another change from West Ham, with Elliot Lee being replaced by Jerry Amoo.

77 mins - Sean Maguire replaces Turgott. The Irishman was not impressed by Kilkenny's defeat in the GAA All-Ireland Hurling on Sunday. Let's hope he can take his frustrations out on the Shrimpers.

76 mins - Payne has probably been Southend's liveliest player since half-time and he cuts inside Shaw and shoots to the near post, where Spiegel dives to his left and holds on. Good handling. Seconds later, West Ham attack and Nasha's cross dips just past the angle of crossbar and far post.

75 mins - Turgott keeps on running and he wins another corner for West Ham off Bennett. Southend clear and then nearly benefit from a mix-up between Shaw and Spiegel.

73 mins - Spence is replaced by Amos Nasha, who slots in at right-back.

71 mins - Ruddock gives the ball away and Southend have a chance to break. Eventually, Auger crosses from the right and Corr leaps and heads wide. He was stretching, was the Southend goalscorer.

69 mins - Superb covering from Potts, who is now playing at centre-back alongside Ruddock. He comes across and nicks the ball after Payne had beaten Ruddock.

67 mins - Great pace by Turgott to race back 60 yards and get in a vital challenge on Payne as the No11 bore down on the penalty area. Had he got that wrong, it would have been a professional foul. Seedy Nije has bedded in on the right side of the midfield.

65 mins - West Ham raid again through Turgott and then Potts, whose low cross hits Thompson and bounces into the side-netting. Corner. Before it is taken, Southend bring on No14 Seedy Nije for Cowan. Seedy Nije is probably the best football name I've ever seen. West Ham bring on Frazer Shaw for Chambers.

61 mins -Timlin is replaced by No12 Jack Edwards for the hosts.

60 mins - West Ham are surely destined never to score tonight! Tombides charges down a pass and breaks free down the left. He checks and picks out Lee with a fantastic cross. The No10 heads down for the unmarked Sadlier ten yards out. The goal is gaping, but he smashes the half-volley over the top. Another great chance goes begging, but it was superb build-up play.

57 mins - Ruddock is hacked down by a sliding Clifford. No booking, but it would be during the league season. Turgott draws four men from the short free-kick before clipping the ball over. Tombides loses out initially before Sadlier drops a shoulder and beats two defenders. West Ham want a penalty for handball by Auger, but Mr Bull says 'No'. Bentley dives on the loose ball.

52 mins - Dylan Tombides is on for McCallum. The Australian is sporting a unique hairstyle.

51 mins - Take cover! Ruddock lifts a ball over the Southend defence, who allow McCallum to run free. He shapes to try an audacious volley from an acute angle but slices it well wide and into the West Ham fans behind the goal. That must have gone 15 yards wide.

49 mins - West Ham win a free-kick wide of the penalty area. Moncur takes it and Ruddock heads the ball high over the top. The Hammers pressing hard for an equaliser.

47 mins - McCallum wins the ball back on the edge of the box from Barker and finds Turgott. He takes a touch and fires a rising shot towards the roof of the net. Bentley sticks out his right hand and makes a fine save to divert the ball over the top. The corner comes to nothing.

46 mins - The game is back underway here at Roots Hall. Southend kick-off shooting towards the South Stand.

No substitutions at half-time from West Ham, but Eastwood has been replaced by Mitchell Pinnock for Southend. Pinnock has gone to the left, with Cowan going up front.

The entire West Ham squad are out on the pitch at present. The starters are doing some jogging, while the substitutes are doing some ballwork.

46 mins - That's half-time. Amazingly, Southend lead.

44 mins - It's a harsh lesson for West Ham's youngsters. They need to re-group and they do so quickly as Lee wins a corner. West Ham waste it and Chambers loses the ball inside the Southend half. The break is on, but Cowan and Corr fail to spot the two unmarked players on the far side.

43 mins - Goal! After all West Ham's domination and chances created and missed, Southend take the lead through Barry Corr. He steps up and curls a shot past the wall and high into the net to Spiegel's left.

42 mins - Bennett's long throw causes chaos. West Ham cannot clear the ball but somehow Payne cannot force the ball over the line from about a yard. The ball spins outside the box but then Ruddock fouls Timlin right on the edge of the penalty area. It's very dangerous.

40 mins - Clifford has a go from about 30 yards, but he misses the target by a long distance.

39 mins - Turgott gives the ball away trying to find Lee. Southend build and Eastwood wrong-foots Ruddock before shooting low with his left foot. The shot has Spiegel scrambling but drifts a fair way wide.

37 mins - Another decent chance goes begging! Turgott slaloms and speeds to the byline before cutting a ball back over the defenders and goalkeeper to Sadlier. The No11 has time but he drags his volley into the ground and it bounces into the side-netting at the near post.

35 mins - Two more corners for West Ham. First, Lee's shot is well saved by Bentley and Auger blocks Sadlier's follow-up behind, then Sadlier tries to cross when the ball is cleared only as far as Lletget, but again the ball spins behind. Sadlier is in the action again, collecting a return pass, but then he loses the ball to Cowan and fouls the No9.

34 mins - That came out of nowhere! Timlin strides forward and shoots powerfully to Spiegel's right. The goalkeeper parries and Corr is there to collect the rebound, but he cannot get a shot away. He lays the ball off and Cowan slices his effort wide from the corner of the box. That was a bit rushed.

33 mins - Turgott wins another corner. Moncur floats the ball across and Bentley collects easily enough. West Ham are dominating the game because they are moving the ball so much quicker than their hosts. The technical ability and potential is there for all to see, but they all know there is still work to be done.

31 mins - West Ham sweep through the Southend defence again as Moncur finds Sadlier. The Irishman shoots low and Barker makes another vital block. The ball spins wide. The corner drops dangerously inside the six-yard box and it looks like Thompson has cleared over his own crossbar, but referee Michael Bull gives a goal kick.

30 mins - Cowan wins a corner this time as his cross hits Chambers and loops onto the roof of the stand. McCallum heads away.

28 mins - Potts concedes a dangerous free-kick by shoving Cowan. The ball is headed out and West Ham break through Lee. He cuts inside and then tries to release Turgott through the middle, but the assistant raises his flag for offside.

25 mins - West Ham have a corner after another flowing move leads to Potts winning it. The flag kick is taken short and worked to Ruddock, but his weak shot is blocked.

22 mins - How are West Ham not ahead? Moncur's corner drops to Lee inside the box and he has two efforts in the space of a second. The first one is a header that is saved by Bentley, but the ball drops back to the forward, only for his scuffed effort to be cleared off the line by Auger. Amazing action!

21 mins - West Ham are battering their experienced hosts at present. Moncur is again there when Turgott crosses from the right, but this time his shot from the D is blocked by Barker.

20 mins - Only a great save from Bentley denies Moncur the opening goal after superb build-up play involving Turgott and Lletget inside the box. The cut-back looked to be going nowhere until the ball struck a defender and fell into Moncur's path. Great save with Bentley's left leg.

19 mins - Another chance for the Hammers. Turgott collects the pass after McCallum had missed the ball competely on his chest. Turgott waits for the run of Lee, then threads the pass through. Barker slides in to make a vital block and the ball spins behind. The corner is cleared, but West Ham soon come again...

17 mins - Turgott sends a low shot wide from 25 yards. That was never threatening the target.

16 mins - West Ham attack with numbers. Turgott and Spence combine but the initial cross flicks off Thompson's head to Sadlier. He controls and finds Potts overlapping. The left-back crosses and the ball is headed out only as far as Lee. The striker had been blocked in the initial build-up, but now he has time and space to control and send a dipping volley a yard over the top from the edge of the box. Shouts of 'Ooooooh' from the other end of the stadium, where the West Ham fans are congregated.

13 mins - Lee usually hits the target but not this time. The striker cuts onto his right foot and works a yard of space up against Barker. His shot is low, but Bentley can watch it drift a yard or two wide of the left-hand post. Goal kick.

12 mins - Southend are still on the offensive as the ball is worked across to the right-hand side for left-back Bennett, who is still up from the corner. He shoots low, but drags his effort well wide.

11 mins - Southend win another corner off Spence. It's taken short and worked to Payne. He skips past one challenge before Moncur puts in an inch-perfect sliding tackle inside the box. Risky, but it worked.

10 mins - Ruddock is back on. He is in the right place seconds later to toe-poke Auger's dangerous cross high into the air. Spiegel collects. That was an important interception as Eastwood would have been in.

8 mins - Superb save from Spiegel to deny Barry Corr. The Irishman's angled drive was heading for the far top corner until the Switzerland U21 gloveman stuck out a hand to tip it over the top. Corner. West Ham are put under pressure, but the visitors hold firm following an important Ruddock header. The referee blows his whistle as the No6 is hurt as he clears it. The physio is on, but I'd say Ruddock is OK to continue.

6 mins - Nick Haycock bemoaned West Ham's defending of set pieces at Braintree last week. This time, the first test comes by way of Bennett's long throw, but Spiegel is there to make the catch high above the heads. Dominant goalkeeping.

4 mins - Moncur curls a dipping free-kick into the box and Bentley makes a hash of trying to catch the ball on the bounce. Lee and Potts are in there, but Bentley scrambled the ball behind for a corner. The delivery from Moncur finds the head of McCallum, but he mis-times his jump and the ball skims off his head and away for a goal kick.

2 mins - It has been a competitive opening two minutes. First, Chambers left Cowan in a heap on the turf, then Potts was unceremoniously pulled back. In between, Cowan's run and low cross from the right edge of the box came to nothing.

7.48pm - West Ham get things underway hereat Roots Hall. There is a decent following from east London in the North Stand away to my right.

7.47pm - Here come the two teams. West Ham are being captained by Dan Potts. Southend's skipper is Michael Timlin.

7.44pm - First-team coach Ian Hendon is here to keep tabs on the young players performing for the Hammers tonight. It looks like kick-off is going to be delayed as the teams have yet to come out of the tunnel.

7.40pm - West Ham will employ a 4-4-1-1 formation tonight. Spiegel in goal will play behind a back four of Spence, Chambers, Ruddock and Potts. The midfield four will be Turgott, Lletget, Moncur and Sadlier, while Lee will play just behind centre forward McCallum. Southend will have Auger, Thompson, Barker and Bennett at the back, a midfield of Cowan, Clifford, Timlin and Payne, and Eastwood and Corr up front.

7.30pm - It's a lovely evening here on the south Essex coast. The sun is shining and the heatwave which threatened to disappear over the weekend has now returned. The low sun in the sky might prove a little difficult for the goalkeepers, however. I'm told Southend have been playing quite well in pre-season, but a lack of senior players means they don't have too many options. Phil Brown has been quoted in the local newspaper, the Echo, that he wants to bring in some young players and one or two of West Ham's might be in his sights for loan moves. We shall see.

6.30pm - Some sad news to start with, I am afraid. Former Birmingham City and Club America striker Christian 'Chucho' Benitez, who played under West Ham's current owners at St Andrew's, has died suddenly at the age of 27. Chucho was taken ill after making his debut for Qatari club El Jaish. Everyone at West Ham United would like to pass on their sincere condolences to Christian Benitez's family and friends at this sad time.

Good evening and welcome to Roots Hall for tonight's pre-season match between Southend United and a West Ham United XI.

Nick Haycock takes charge of a youthful Hammers selection this evening, but there remains plenty of first-team and Football League experience in his starting XI. The likes of Jordan Spence, George Moncur and Dan Potts have all played first-team football for West Ham, while Pelly Ruddock, Sebastian Lletget, Paul McCallum and Elliot Lee have recently returned after training and playing with Sam Allardyce's squad in Germany.

Conditions are set to be far removed from the soaking wet scene that greeted the Hammers on their previous visit to Roots Hall in July 2012. Then, on a pitch which resembled a swamp, Sam Baldock, Nicky Maynard and Spence all scored in a 3-0 West Ham win. Potts will have more difficulty recalling the game, as he left the field with concussion following an accidental clash with a Shrimpers player.

More recently, the Development Squad have played three pre-season matches so far, defeating Swansea City 4-0 before being edged out 3-2 by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Braintree Town.

Southend are now managed by Phil Brown, who served as Big Sam's assistant for six years at Bolton Wanderers before going on to forge a reputation for himself as a No1 at Hull City. Having led the Tigers to the top-flight, Brown later managed Preston North End before being appointed as Southend boss in March 2013.

The Shrimpers have something of a player shortage at present, with injuries and a host of summer departures leaving Brown seeking new options ahead of the 2013/14 League Two campaign. Indeed, the Southend manager has been quoted as saying he will be looking at West Ham's youngsters this evening with a view to taking one or two of them on loan.

One Southend player who West Ham fans will recognise is striker Freddy Eastwood, who came through the ranks at the Academy of Football before enjoying prolific spells with non-league Grays Athletic and Southend and stints with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City. Eastwood has also scored four times in eleven appearances for Wales.

The Shrimpers hosted Harry Redknapp's Queens Park Rangers on Friday evening in their most-recent pre-season game, losing 3-1 in a match that saw the Hoops start former Hammer Robert Green in goal.
