West Ham United thank supporters

West Ham United and the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK would like to thank fans for their amazing support in honouring the 20th anniversary of the passing of the late, great Bobby Moore OBE.

Hammers supporters have shown tremendous dignity and generosity in recent days, honouring the West Ham and England legend in a style befitting the club's finest-ever player.

At Monday's Barclays Premier League visit of Tottenham Hotspur, principal partner SBOBET made a £5,000 donation to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK - the charity founded by Bobby's widow Stephanie Moore MBE following his death from bowel cancer in February 1993.

A further estimated £5,000 was raised through the sale of a special 100-page Commemorative Programme for Monday's match. Nearly 11,000 copies were sold, with 50 pence from the sale of each being donated to the charity.

Nearly £2,000 was raised by supporters making generous donation to a bucket collection held in and around the Boleyn Ground, while a further £900 was raised via text donations. These generous donations will be added to the club's fundraising total, with the Hammers nearing their target of raising £50,000 for the Bobby Moore Fund this season.

Before kick-off, a minute's applause in memory of Bobby was immaculately supported, while a mosaic depicting the centre-half's famous No6 shirt created by fans in the Bobby Moore Stand added to a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

The specially-embroidered shirts worn by the West Ham players will be signed and auctioned off soon to raise further funds for the charity. The sale of the number plate 'W6UFC' - generously donated by fan Dean Borg - will also be organised soon, with details to be confirmed on whufc.com

On Sunday, hundreds of fans joined Bobby's daughter Roberta, his three grandchildren Ava, Freddie and Poppy, 1966 FIFA World Cup winner Martin Peters MBE, Joint-Chairman David Gold and club chaplain Rev Alan Bolding at a special wreath-laying ceremony at The Champions sculpture to mark the 20th anniversary of Bobby's death.

Joint-Chairman David Sullivan said: "I think the activities on Sunday and Monday once again showed how special West Ham United and its supporters truly are. Several hundred fans braved freezing temperatures on Sunday morning to pay tribute at a wreath-laying ceremony at his statue on Barking Road and that was followed up by tens of thousands of Hammers supporters creating a truly unique atmosphere for Bobby's friends and family at Monday's game with Tottenham Hotspur.

"It is fantastic that we have all been able to raise so much for money for the charity set up in Bobby's name and on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our fans for their generosity and dedication they showed to honouring Bobby's memory.

"I, and I am sure every football fan watching, was truly moved during both the minute's applause and when the mosaic depicting Bobby's No6 shirt was displayed by the supporters in the stand bearing his name. I am sure Bobby would have been very proud of his club and the tribute our fans paid to him."
