Carlton Cole inspired West Ham to their first away win in 28 top-flight matches as they secured three vital points on Boxing Day.

Things had however started badly for the visitors, who went behind when Aaron Hughes headed home when unmarked in the penalty area after 11 minutes.

Cole then took it upon himself to fire the away side level as he pounced on Dickson Etuhu's error to slide the ball under Mark Schwarzer after 37 minutes.

Frederic Piquionne volleyed the Hammers in front on the stroke of half-time before Cole won the game with a left-foot volley with 17 minutes remaining.

A quick-fire double at the end of the first half propelled West Ham to their first away win of the 2008/09 season.

Matthew Etherington and Carlton Cole combined for the first goal with the winger driving the ball across for Cole to dispatch into the net after 43 minutes.

Etherington himself then got on the scoresheet in time added on when he raced on to a Mark Noble through ball and struck his shot past Mark Schwarzer.

The home side set-up an interesting finale when Danny Murphy dispatched a penalty after 59 minutes but it wasn't enough and the fans from east London went home happy.

Both teams honoured Bobby Moore before kick-off as the weekend of the match marked 15 years since the passing of the defender, who served both clubs with distinction.

It was the Hammers though, the team Moore played 646 games for, that won a close match with Nolberto Solano grabbing the winner three minutes before time.

The midfielder replaced Julian Faubert after 63 minutes and struck the vital goal when he hooked the ball past Anti Niemi to send the visiting fans into raptures.

Marlon Harewood bagged a brace as West Ham emerged victorious against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The striker had already had a goal disallowed when he put the Hammers in front after 46 minutes when he chipped the ball over David Warner following Bobby Zamora's flick-on.

Six minutes later and Harewood's fierce drive struck a post and then the keeper before rolling into the net.

Luis Boa Morte struck back for the hosts after 66 minutes when he scored from the edge of the box but it wasn't enough to inspire a comeback.

A penalty late in the day settled this contest as Paolo Di Canio kept his nerve in stoppage time to condemn the Cottagers to defeat.

Zat Knight was the offender as a two-footed lunge on Jermain Defoe after 90 minutes resulted in the crucial penalty which was comfortably dispatched by the Italian.

The goal was just rewards for the visitors who had earlier had a Defoe goal wrongly ruled out for offside before they continued to dominate the home side.

Frederic Kanoute's goal was the difference between the two sides at Craven Cottage as the Hammers celebrated three hard earned points in west London.

The Frenchman netted in first half stoppage time when he leapt highest to head home Trevor Sinclair's cross to give West Ham the lead.

Fulham pushed for an equaliser and even goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar had a header from a corner go over the bar as they searched in vain for a leveller.
