West Ham United 1-0 Sunderland
10 April 2010
Premier League
Gianfranco Zola's Hammers ended a run of seven games without a win courtesy of a 1-0 home success over Sunderland on this day in 2010. Six defeats and a draw had seen West Ham plummet to 17th and within a point of the bottom three, before Ilan's second timely intervention in as many weeks.
Last time out, the Brazilian forward had stooped to head a dramatic late equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Everton, only to go one better at the Boleyn Ground the following Saturday. After a nervous and goalless first 45, it took just six second-half minutes for Zola's men to edge ahead.
Carlton Cole flicked on Manuel Da Costa's free-kick, allowing Ilan to stab past Craig Gordon to notch his third goal in claret and blue and his first at the Boleyn Ground. The home side clung on for a crucial three points, only their third of the calendar year.
While West Ham would only collect a further four points from their final four outings, a final points tally of 35 proved ample to sustain their top-flight status. The Hammers ended the campaign down in 17th, albeit some five points clear of the drop zone.
