West Ham United were undone by a spirited Ipswich Town and fell to a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night.

The Hammers went into the game on the back of their best start to a league season for 28 years as Sam Allardyce made three changes with this game the second of three in eight days. In came Sam Baldock (pictured right) and David Bentley for their first starts, while James Tomkins was used at the back in place of Winston Reid.

In front of 27, 709 fans at the Boleyn, Ipswich began the brighter and tested Robert Green inside the first five minutes through Michael Chopra. Former Hammers midfielder Lee Bowyer then hit the crossbar while West Ham found chances hard to come by.

The manager soon switched back from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and introduced John Carew and Jack Collison in the second half, but neither side could find a breakthrough until Bowyer smashed in with barely a minute of normal time remaining.

The defeat ended the Hammers' seven match unbeaten run with the team hoping to make instant amends with Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace.
