Sam Baldock and Jack Collison might have got the goalscoring plaudits but it was a collective team display that won the day at Hull City.
The Hammers had to earn the right to play, something the manager has instilled in them since his arrival at the club, and they did just that. After a keenly-fought first 45, the visitors were a different side after the interval.
The introduction of Carlton Cole at half-time paved the way, while Robert Green was imperious behind a resolute back-four superbly marshalled by James Tomkins and Abdoulaye Faye. One member of the press called the second-half showing a "complete performance" and there were not too many among the 2,500-odd travelling fans who would have disagreed.
There is now the prospect of a welcome few days off for the team before they will regroup later in the international break and prepare for Saturday week's fourth City outing in a row. Leicester City, Bristol City and Hull City will be followed by the trip to Coventry City. The Hammers will head there on a high.
