Eoin Wearen helped the Republic of Ireland make a winning start to their UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round qualifying campaign.
The Irish were 1-0 winners against mini-tournament hosts Poland in Koszalin, meaning they have taken a surprise hold on Group 4. Hammers midfielder Wearen was a 66th-minute substitute, and came up against former Academy right-back Filip Modelski, who has been released by the club.
Ireland are next in action on Friday against Ukraine before a Sunday showdown with Italy that could prove pivotal. The group winners will go forward to the eight-nation finals in Romania, to be played between 20 July and 1 August.
