Ladies start with derby draw

West Ham United Ladies kicked-off the new FA Women's Premier League South season by being held to a hard-fought 2-2 draw at newly-promoted Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Hammers had found themselves a goal down but went into half-time level after Gemma Shepherd smashed home the rebound when Jo Wosahlo's looping shot had cannoned back to her off the crossbar six minutes before the interval.

The Hammers looked to be heading for three points on 65 minutes when new signing Kelley Blanchflower lobbed home after getting on the end of a well-judged through ball from Carly Roache, but the home side forced an equaliser with eight minutes remaining to see both sides settle for a point apiece.

Julia Setford fielded a number of new players in the Ladies' opening fixture of the season, including goalkeeper Kelly Cooper, defender Kerry-Anne Stimson and striker Blanchflower, who had netted five goals in pre-season.

The Hammers continue their league season with a second straight London derby by welcoming Millwall to Thurrock FC this Sunday afternoon, 28 August, at 2pm.
