Winston Reid was sent off as New Zealand lost 2-0 to Paraguay in the early hours of Tuesday morning UK time.
The Wellington friendly was a rematch after the teams drew 0-0 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals. Reid was making his second appearance in four days after a positive 90 minutes in last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Honduras in Auckland.
Paraguay proved too strong for an All Whites side without key players Ryan Nelsen, the captain, and Shane Smeltz. The South American side took control midway through the first half with goals from Nelson Valdez and Osvaldo Martinez and never looked back.
Meanwhile, Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson will play at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Denmark next summer after Iceland beat Scotland in a two-legged play-off. The young Hammers centre-back was suspended for last night's 2-1 win in Edinburgh that sealed a 4-2 aggregate success.
